On January 27, 2011 Eric Merkley was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. An aggressive cancer that we hope and the doctors to this point seem confident that is contained to one spot on his leg. Prognosis is good. Treatments and recovery will be long and painful.

Much Accomplished

First the thought for the day:

This is the beginning of a new day.
You have been given this day to use as you will.
You can waste it or use it for good.
What you do today is important because you are
exchanging a day of your life for it.

We have been able to accomplish so much in these past 2 days.  We did meet with the new prosthetic company called Hanger (Formally known as SPOT).  We were very impressed.  We explained our frustrations (okay I did most of the complaining) and we learned a lot throughout the conversation.  We listened to what Phil would do to accommodate Eric's needs and why he would do it.  He said he could even introduce Eric to an amputee basketball league if he is interested.  We went over the financial situation with Fit Well and was given advice as to how to handle it.  So I did make a few calls while Eric was being re casted.  At one point Phil stepped out of the office to grab something and I asked Eric what he thought and he lite up and said, "Now he knows what he is talking about."
Did you know that insurance companies can not put a limit on a prosthetic limb in the state of Utah, say $5,000?  They have to at least cover what Medicare/Medicaid would cover.  So we received a huge blessing.  We thought we were going to have to come up with a significant amount of money out of our pockets, but Eric's leg is paid for through the insurance... THANK YOU TODD!!!  (Todd's policy covers Eric also, thank goodness.)

Daryl called me last night on the way home from work and found a truck in SL to look at.  He not only negotiated the price, he also got the people to hold it so we can come test drive it.  So off we went to SL.  I am so thrilled with this purchase.  It is always scary to purchase a vehicle that has significant miles on (so a teenager can afford it).  But Daryl found a gem.  Today we spent running around working on a few misc things with the truck, licensing it etc.  But Eric has found his wings again and he is wearing a smile!

Today was just a great feel good day, knowing that we were able to accomplish a lot.  The snow that covered our house and lawn, was a little depressing to me, because I am not ready for winter, heck we did not get a summer! Good thing the snow did not last long! :)  But Life is Great!

  1. My brother-in-law was just telling me about a news spot he saw on an amputee basketball league. I thought of Eric and smiled when I read this. Glad it is going well.
