On January 27, 2011 Eric Merkley was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. An aggressive cancer that we hope and the doctors to this point seem confident that is contained to one spot on his leg. Prognosis is good. Treatments and recovery will be long and painful.

The First Basketball game

Last night was the Salem Hills basketball game in the preseason.

Eric wanted so bad to be on the court, and it was hard not to see him on the court.  But I kept telling myself  "all in good time!"  Right?!  He has been going to the gym and working out.  Now that he has his permanent socket (I will need to get a picture of it to show you what it looks like now) the prosthetic guy, Phil, told him he is free to start running on it. Eric will need to relearn how to run, because it is very different from what he learned as a toddler.  But he will get there...So the story goes on!

  1. Oh my goodness, this brought tears to my eyes. The smile on his face says it all. He loves the game and I'm so happy that he is done with cancer and can move on. He will get there, because he's Eric. Maddie rang the bell today!!! Oh and guess what, she finished chemo in the same room Eric did, she thought that was pretty cool, until she got really sick and then she thought Eric jinxed her. Keep us posted we love to follow your blog and see how you are all doing. Best of luck to you all.

  2. We loved seeing you all at the game. We are there in a different capacity this year (watching our daughter cheer, as well as the younger basketball boys that we know and love). Eric, you look fantastic... healthy and happy and we are so happy for you. As a coach assistant, player, fan, whatever... we are so happy you are back. The Obray's
